US confesses it imposed secondary tariffs on India to force Russia into ending the Ukraine war

New Delhi: America has imposed secondary tariffs on India, reportedly to pressure Russia to halt the war. Tariff is its strategy to put aggressive economic pressure on India.

US Vice President JD Vance accepted this bitter truth in the latest interview on Sunday, 24 August. He had said that the secondary tariffs imposed on India are a means to put pressure on Russia.

Aggressive economic pressure on India

JD Vance said that President Donald Trump has put ‘aggressive economic pressure’ on India to stop Russia from bombing Ukraine. Vance was giving an interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press. He said that this move will make it difficult for the Russians to become rich from their oil economy.

Criticism of India, silent on China

The Trump administration has strongly criticised India for buying discounted crude oil from Russia. Surprisingly, Washington is not criticising China, the largest importer of crude oil from Russia. India says that buying energy, including from Russia, is in its national interest and it is also good for global markets.

Vance is confident that the USA can end the war between Russia and Ukraine. NBC News said that there have been some difficulties after President Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin this month.

‘If Russia stops killing, it can be invited back into the world economy’

Moderator Kristen Welker had asked, “If the US is not imposing new sanctions, then what is the pressure on Russia? How will you convince them to come to the table with Zelensky and stop dropping bombs?” Vance responded, “Trump has put aggressive economic pressure, for example, ‘secondary tariffs’ on India to make it harder for the Russians to get rich from their oil economy.”

“He tried to make it clear that if Russia stops killing, it can be invited back into the world economy. But if they don’t stop killing, they will remain isolated,” said Vance.

India-US relations have soured

Earlier on April 22, while speaking in Jaipur, Vance called on India to remove non-tariff barriers, give more access to its markets and buy more American energy and military hardware. He presented a comprehensive roadmap for a ‘prosperous and peaceful’ 21st century between the two countries.

Relations between New Delhi and Washington have worsened since Trump doubled the tariff on Indian goods to 50 per cent. This includes an additional 25 per cent tariff on India’s purchase of Russian crude oil.
