Kanpur Medical Negligence Row: ITBP Officers Meet UP Police, Demand Fresh Probe

A week after an ITBP commando alleged that his mother’s hand was amputated due to medical negligence at a private hospital in Kanpur, several ITBP officers and jawans reached the Kanpur Police Commissioner’s office, demanding a fair probe into the case.

ITBP commando Vikas Singh, who had lodged a complaint against the private hospital over alleged medical negligence, reached the Police Commissioner’s office on Saturday along with his seniors and the ITBP Commandant. The victim alleged that the team constituted by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) had given a clean chit to the hospital, following which they sought time to meet the Police Commissioner.

The scene turned dramatic inside the Kanpur Police Commissionerate campus when several armed ITBP personnel arrived at the office to demand a fair investigation. While senior ITBP officials were meeting the Police Commissioner inside his office, several armed personnel stood outside, videos of which later went viral on social media.

Initially, it appeared as though the commandos were trying to surround the Police Commissioner’s office. However, senior ITBP officials later clarified that their personnel were merely standing outside the office and had no such intention. They said the meeting with the CP was pre-scheduled and aimed solely at seeking a fair probe.

Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Kanpur, Vipin Tada, who was present during the meeting between ITBP officials and the Police Commissioner said that the victim was dissatisfied with certain findings of the medical team constituted by the CMO after the complaint was raised.

Tada further said that during the meeting the ITBP officers and the CP also called the CMO to the CP office and assured the victim that a fair investigation would be conducted. The police said that a probe will once again take place to investigate the matter particularly the points with which the victim was dissatisfied. He added that if any negligence is found, appropriate action will be taken.

The ITBP Commandant later clarified the viral videos circulating on social media saying that claims of ITBP personnel surrounding the CP office were incorrect. We came here with a prior appointment to discuss the matter with Kanpur Police.
