Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has created history by conducting the first successful test of Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR 120) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) located in Chandipur, Odisha. This is the same Pinak, on hearing whose name the picture of power, destruction and protection of religion emerges in Indian mythology. Let us know about the religious meaning of the name Pinak and its importance.

Pinaka is the invincible bow of Lord Shiva

Pinaka Rocket System is named after ‘Pinaka’, the divine bow of Lord Shiva. According to mythology, Pinaka was the divine bow of Lord Shiva. With this bow he killed the demon named Tripurasura. Tripurasura had created terror in the entire universe with his atrocities and even the gods were afraid of him. Lord Shiva, wearing Pinaka, killed Tripurasura with a single arrow, thereby establishing peace in the entire universe. This is why Pinak is considered a symbol of destruction as well as protection of religion. Therefore Pinaka is not just a weapon, but a symbol of power and religion in the Indian mythological tradition.

Story from Raja Janak to Sita Swayamvara

According to mythological beliefs, after killing Tripurasura, this divine bow was received by Devarat, the ancestor of King Janak. With time, this bow was kept safe in Mithila and it was considered impossible to even move it, let alone lift it. During Sita Swayamvar, King Janak put a condition that only the one who would pick up this bow and string it would marry Sita. In Tretayuga, Lord Shri Ram not only lifted the Pinaka but also broke the bow while offering the string, due to which Sita Swayamvar was completed. This incident is considered a symbol of the power and divinity of Lord Rama.

Importance of Shiv Dhanush Pinak

According to religious texts, Pinak is the name of the bow of Lord Shiva which was created by Vishwakarma himself. The meaning of Shiva’s name ‘Pinaki’ is the one who holds the Pinak bow. This bow was so heavy and powerful that even the gods could not move it. Therefore, it is not just a wooden structure but is considered to be the embodiment of Shiva’s will and power of justice.
