PAN-Aadhaar linking
PAN-Aadhaar Link Deadline: The Income Tax Department has alerted taxpayers regarding the deadline for linking PAN card and Aadhar card. If you are among those who have not yet linked your PAN with Aadhaar, then this news is very important for you. The deadline set by the government is fast approaching. If you do not complete this process in time, your PAN card will be declared “inoperative” from January 1, 2026.
What major problems can arise if PAN card becomes inoperative?
For a common citizen, deactivation of PAN card is not just closure of a document, but it is like stopping of many important works. If your PAN becomes inoperative after January 1, 2026, its consequences can be serious. First of all, you will not be able to file your Income Tax Return (ITR). If any of your old tax refunds are pending with the Income Tax Department, that too will not be issued.
The trouble does not end here. In case of inoperative PAN, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on your financial transactions will be deducted at a higher rate. This will have a direct impact on your pocket. Additionally, wherever PAN card is mandatory—like opening a new bank account, investing in mutual funds or the stock market, or transacting large amounts—you will face problems. In short, an invalid PAN card can lock you out of the world of banking and investments.
How to check your status in minutes sitting at home?
Often people do not remember whether their PAN is linked to Aadhaar or not. Fortunately, the Income Tax Department has provided very simple online and offline methods for this. You can check your status sitting at home. This is the online method.
- First of all, go to the official e-filing website of the Income Tax Department (incometax.gov.in).
- On the homepage you will see the section of Quick Links, click on Link Aadhaar Status there.
- Now enter your PAN and Aadhaar number in the prescribed boxes.
- After this click on View Link Aadhaar Status. It will be clearly written on the screen whether your PAN is linked or not.
Through SMS: If you are not using the internet, you can also get information through SMS. For this you will have to send a message to 567678 or 56161 from your phone. The message format is: UIDPAN
What to do now if there is no link? This is the complete process
If after checking the status it is found that your PAN is not linked, then there is no need to panic, but you have to take immediate action. Since many of the previous deadlines have passed, you will now have to pay a late fee of Rs 1,000 for this service. The linking process is as follows:
- Click on Link Aadhaar option on the homepage of the e-filing portal.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click on Validate.
- Since you are linking after the deadline, you will have to pay Rs 1,000 through e-Pay Tax. Select ‘Minor Head’ for payment.
- Once the payment is successful, an OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
- Enter OTP and submit your request.
Once the request is submitted and payment is confirmed, the Income Tax Department sends your information to UIDAI (Aadhaar Authority) for verification. This process is usually quite fast, but you can check the status again after a day or two to confirm that it is completely linked.
