Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026
Lord Jagannath’s Illness: The festival of the sacred Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is celebrated every year in the temple located in Puri, Odisha. This holy festival of Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is celebrated every year on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. This year this festival of Lord Jagannath will start from 16th July and will continue till 24th July. During this festival, Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra go to Gundicha Devi temple riding on chariots. Gundicha Devi is considered to be the aunt of Lord Jagannath. There is a religious belief that during the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, all the sins are removed by pulling the wheels of the chariots and the path to salvation opens.
Even though the Rath Yatra starts from the second date of Ashadh month, this festival starts from the full moon day of Jyeshtha month itself. On this day, the festival of Snan Purnima is celebrated, in which Mahabhishek of the idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra ji and Subhadra ji is done with the holy water of 108 Kalash. It is believed that after this Mahabhishek, Lord Jagannath becomes ill for 15 days. Snan Purnima has been celebrated and the Lord is ill at this time. This is called Ansar or Anvasar period. Let us know what things are offered to God at the time of illness?
Medicines are offered as food to God
During Ansar period, the doors of the temple of Lord Jagannath are closed. This time is considered to be the time of God’s rest. The offerings made to God during Ansar period are not normal. At this time, service to Lord Jagannath is done according to Vaidya tradition. To quickly heal the Lord, special offerings prepared from decoctions, medicines and herbs are offered to him.
Lord’s Rath Yatra takes place after Navayuvan Darshan
When the Lord becomes completely healthy, then the devotees are given his darshan through Navayuvan Darshan. Only after this Lord Jagannath sets out on a grand Rath Yatra with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.
