BCCI to not fly Mohammed Shami to Australia for rest of BGT Series: Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly in no hurry to send fast bowler Mohammed Shami to Australia for the rest of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Notably, Shami, who has been out of the international cricketing sphere for more than a year, recently played his first game for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy.

The speedster scalped a total of seven dismissals in his first Test and scored crucial 37 runs in almost a year. Earlier before the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah, who shouldered the duties of captain, dropped hints on Shami’s possible return to the Indian squad.

Bumrah said that if things go well, Shami might join the squad Down Under for the rest of the series. Not only this, given his performance on comeback, several pundits and former players wanted the board to fly Shami to Australia but according to reports, there are currently no plans to send the bowler Down Under.

BCCI to not send Shami to Australia anytime soon: Reports

Shami is currently playing SMAT for Bengal these days, and in the two matches so far, he has picked four wickets. The bowler finished with figures of 1/46 in four overs during Bengal’s tournament opener against Punjab and then later dismissed three Hyderabadi batters for 21 in 3.3 overs during the second game. As per the recent reports, there are no conversations around flying Shami to Australia right now as the board is happy with the performance of fast bowlers picked in the five-match series.

According to reports by the Times of India, the board is currently not planning to send the bowler Down Under. A source was quoted by News18 as saying, ‘There has been no conversation around trying to send Shami to Australia, at least for now. At the moment, the fast bowlers chosen for the tour and the first XI in the opening Test at Perth are doing their job very well.’ Notably, the next game of the series will be played from December 6 to December 10 at The Adelaide Oval.
