Rajasthan: 400 years, 22 kings… How was the Royal Udaipur City Palace of Sisodia dynasty built? full story

Vishvaraj Singh was appointed as the head of the former royal family on 25 November in Chittorgarh Fort. Vishvaraj Singh is a member of the former royal family of Mewar. The Mewar family is the descendant of the glorious ruler Maharana Pratap, hence the tradition of placing him on the throne was followed. After being declared the successor of Chittorgarh, Vishvaraj Singh wanted to go to the City Palace in Udaipur and pay obeisance at the ‘Dhuni Sthal’, but the current Trust head Arvind Singh Mewar declared it illegal.

Vishvaraj Singh Mewar’s supporters are protesting on the road outside the City Palace in Udaipur for not being allowed to enter the palace. Vishvaraj Singh Mewar himself is also sitting there. In such a situation, let us know who built this palace and what is its history.

There is a group of many palaces

City Palace is not a single palace but a group of many palaces. Maharana Udai Singh II started building the City Palace in the year 1559, but he was not able to complete it. After this, many rulers built it during their respective reigns. The construction of the palace was completed in 11 phases. This palace was built by 22 kings together. City Palace of Udaipur is a mixture of Nagar, Rajput and Mughal styles. It took about 400 years to complete.

Construction of Tripolia Gate

The seven arches of the Tripolia Gate, the main entrance of the palace, symbolize the seven kings’ donation of gold and silver worth their weight. Tripolia Gate was built by Maharana Sangram Singh II in 1710 and Hawa Mahal is built on top of it. This palace was built by Maharaja Bhim Singh about 100 years after its construction. The wall in front of the gate is called ‘Agad’, where elephant fights took place.

Some parts of this palace have been converted into two hotels. There is a fan kept in the room of the palace. To run it, not current but kerosene is required. The City Palace of Udaipur is a wonderful historical and architectural example.
