New Delhi: Many former US administration officials have started raising their voices over the changes in the foreign policy of the USA since Donald Trump came to power in January this year.
John Kerry, who was the US Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017 during Obama’s tenure, has taunted the Trump administration for their policy of constantly threatening countries. John said that no great country keeps giving ultimatums all the time. He also described the ongoing tension between PM Modi and Trump over trade and tariffs as unfortunate.
What did the former US Secretary of State say about Trump’s foreign policy?
While speaking at ET’s World Leader Forum, Kerry said, “Great nations do not always demonstrate their greatness by giving ultimatums to people. Instead, they make real diplomatic efforts to help build consensus and carry out normal work.”
Talking about the ongoing tariff tension between the US and India, Kerry said that dialogue between any two countries takes place through cooperation and respect. “You cannot force anyone to talk”.
Praises PM Modi and Piyush Goyal
Calling PM Modi his friend, Kerry said that he appreciates the efforts being made by India to negotiate with the US. He said, “Piyush Goyal has been a good friend of mine. I hope he will resolve this dispute in a better way. To be honest, I think India has made a very strong offer in the negotiations for this trade deal. You know, no tariff on 60 per cent of things and work will be done on the rest as well. This is a big change.”
Trump has used threats as a tool against every country
It is worth noting that John Kerry saying this without naming the Trump administration is an indication of the change in US foreign policy. Since Trump came to power, there has hardly been a country that has not been threatened by the USA. Whether it is a neighbouring country like Canada, the European partners, friendly countries like India or countries like China and Russia. In the last 6 months, Trump has threatened almost everyone in some way or another. Consequently, criticism of his policy has increased in the US as well.
