Sunny Deol continues to remain one of the most prominent actors that Hindi cinema has ever seen. With decades of experience in the industry, he has captivated audiences with his powerful dialogue delivery and strong screen-presence.
While he is a powerhouse on-screen, he has always been reluctant to dance and would struggle with choreography very often. One such incident happened during the filming of the song ‘Na Jaane Kahan Se’ in the 1989 superhit film Chaalbaaz alongside Sridevi.
When Sunny Deol disappeared from the set leaving Sridevi angry
In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, filmmaker Pankaj recalled how Sunny Deol ran away from the sets as he was terrified shooting a dance sequence with Sridevi. He recalled, “The song ‘Na Jaane Kahan Se’, we had only three days to shoot it because there was strike brewing.” He added that Sridevi instructed him to come with unique visuals for the song. While she was fascinated with his ideas, Saroj Khan planned to come up with something different. “Saroj ji called me up and said, ‘Madam is happy, but now I have to come up with unique steps’. I said, ‘We’ll make Sunny dance'”, the director said.
Pankaj continued, “So, we started shooting. We were all coming up with ideas on the spot. Then, it’s time for Sunny to dance. He looked at the step and said, ‘I’ll just come from the bathroom’. He didn’t come back only. He was nowhere to be found for two hours.” While the whole crew, including Saroj Khan and Sridevi, were waiting for him to return. Both were frustrated as Sunny was nowhere to be found. Sridevi, then lost her calm and shouted, “Kidhar hai hero?,” Sunny finally arrived two hours later, receiving praise from the whole crew for finally doing the steps.
What was Sunny Deol and Sridevi’s equation like?
Recently, during a fan interaction with Zoom, Sunny was asked about her favourite female co-star. The actor was quick to respond that he has a great equation with all of them, but had limited interactions with Sridevi. He noted, “The only equation jaha pe zyada baat-chit nahi hui thi was with Sridevi because of how she portrayed herself and conducted herself. I was very upfront with her. She was a very fine actress. She would improvise on the spot, so one had to be alert with her.”
Besides Chaalbaaz, Sridevi and Sunny Deol collaborated in five other films including Nigahein (1989), Joshilaay (1989), Main Tera Dushman (1989), Ram Avtar (1988) and Sultanat (1986), and captivated audiences with their impeccable chemistry.
