Damascus/New Delhi. A massive bomb blast occurred in a mosque during Friday prayers in Syria’s Homs city on Friday. In this blast, 8 people died on the spot, while 18 people were injured. The blast is the second blast at a place of worship since Islamic authorities took power a year ago. Earlier in June 2025, 25 people were killed in a suicide bomb blast in a church in Damascus.
Bomb blast in ‘Imam Ali bin Abi Talib’ mosque of Homs
State news agency SANA reported an explosion inside the ‘Imam Ali bin Abi Talib’ mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab area of the city of Homs. Meanwhile, Syria’s Interior Ministry said in a statement that the mosque was targeted during Friday prayers in a terrorist blast. Homs was the scene of heavy sectarian violence during the Syrian civil war.
Explosives planted inside the mosque exploded
The Syrian Interior Ministry has imposed a security cordon around the mosque. Officials said they have started investigation and gathering evidence to find the culprits of the attack. “Preliminary investigation shows that the blast was caused by explosive devices planted inside the mosque,” news agency SANA quoted a security source as saying.
Ambulance sirens are heard everywhere in Homs
At the same time, a local resident of this area, on the condition of anonymity due to fear of his safety, told the news agency that during the Friday prayers, people heard a loud explosion, after which chaos and panic spread in the area. No one is daring to step out of their homes and we are hearing ambulance sirens everywhere.”
