Chennai Rain Update: Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms Today, but Relief Soon – Here’s Why

Chennai Weather: Chennai woke up to yet another rain-soaked morning on Friday, 23 August 2025, as widespread heavy showers lashed the city and its suburbs for the second consecutive day.

The wet spell, which brought much-needed relief from sultry conditions, is now likely to shift focus towards other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Storms Move South and Delta-bound

According to a solo forecast on X by the name Chennai Rains, action will gradually move towards the Delta districts, adjoining pockets of North Tamil Nadu, and parts of South Tamil Nadu later today. Residents in these regions may experience moderate to intense thunderstorms during the evening and night hours, bringing with them gusty winds and lightning.

First Big Thunderstorm Event of the Season

Meteorologists believe this may have been the first widespread thunderstorm event of this year’s southwest monsoon season for North Coastal Tamil Nadu. Almost every area in the Kancheepuram-Tiruvallur-Chennai-Chengalpattu (KTCC) belt witnessed strong showers, marking a significant shift in monsoon activity.

Chennai Weather Forecast

While Friday may still see moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, rainfall is expected to reduce across most of Tamil Nadu from tomorrow. Chennai’s seven-day forecast shows partly cloudy skies with chances of drizzle or light rain through the weekend, and temperatures climbing up to 36 degrees Celsius next week. By midweek, showers are expected to become lighter and less widespread, eventually tapering into drizzle.

The recent downpour has brought a welcome respite from Chennai’s humid weather, but it also caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during evening storms, especially with lightning and thunderstorm warnings issued for 22 and 23 August.
