Another Hindu youth was murdered in Bangladesh. 29-year-old Amrit Mandal alias Samrat was beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari district. It is alleged that he had gone to collect money, but when noise was raised, the villagers caught him and killed him.

Local media reported on Thursday that 29-year-old Amrit Mandal alias Samrat was killed at 11 pm in Pangsha sub-district of Rajbari. This place is about three and a half hours away from the capital Dhaka.

Locals told Bangladesh’s The Daily Star that Samrat was the leader of a criminal gang named ‘Samrat Vahini’, which was involved in extortion among other activities. Samrat had fled the country after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster from power last year and had recently returned to his village Hosendanga in Kalimohar Union.

Beaten to death by villagers on charges of extorting money

According to reports, around 11 pm on Wednesday night, Samrat and some other people of his gang had allegedly gone to the house of a villager, Shahidul Islam, to collect money. During this, Shahidul’s family members started shouting. On this the people around caught hold of the emperor and beat him so much that he died. At the same time, other people of his gang managed to escape. Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar said that the police somehow saved Samrat from the crowd and he was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The government said there were at least two cases registered against the emperor at the Pangsha police station, including a murder case. Mohammed Salim, an associate of Samrat, was arrested with a pistol and a gun.

The murder of 29-year-old Samrat has come at a time when the atmosphere in Bangladesh is already tense after the lynching of factory worker Dipu Chandra Das, which is once again raising serious questions on the safety of minorities in the country.
