Baijnath Mahadev Temple
Baijnath Mahadev Temple, located in Agar-Malwa district of Madhya Pradesh, has a unique history. This temple is located on Susner Road of Agar-Malwa, which is one of the major tourist and religious places of the district. The height of the peak of the temple is about 50 feet. This is the only temple in India which was renovated by the British. The temple is built on the banks of Banganga river. Actually, this ancient temple built in the 16th century was renovated by a British Army officer in 1883. That officer had become a devotee of Shiva due to a miraculous incident.
The name of the British army was Lieutenant Colonel Martin, who went to participate in the Afghanistan war. His wife lived in Agar Malwa Cantonment. She did not get any news from her husband for a few days. One day, worried, she reached the dilapidated Baijnath temple on horseback. The aarti and chanting of mantras there attracted him. Seeing his distress, the priests advised him to chant ‘Om Namah Shivay’ for 11 days. She vowed that if her husband returned safely, she would get the temple renovated.
The result of Martin’s wife chanting mantras
Exactly on the tenth day after he started chanting the mantra, a letter came from Martin. He wrote a shocking thing in it. He told that when the enemies surrounded him in the war, a yogi appeared wearing a tiger’s skin and holding a trident in his hand and drove away the enemies. Martin told that Yogi told him that he had come to save him because of his wife’s prayers.
Fortunately, after her husband’s safe return, the Martin couple renovated the temple with a huge donation of Rs 15,000. The evidence of this can be seen even today in the inscriptions of the temple. After this he went to England, but it is said that he installed a Shivalinga in his house and worshiped Shiva till his last breath.
