In Jagannath Puri, devotees are ‘caned’ as prasad. It is said to be related to Shri Krishna.

The practice of ‘caning’ the devotees as Prasad

The tradition of ‘caning’ the devotees as Prasad in Jagannath Puri is related to the childhood of Shri Krishna. Lord Shri Krishna was very mischievous in his childhood. He was always scolded by his mother Yashoda. Not only this, sometimes mother Yoshada used to beat Bhagwan with a cane also. Cane is very dear to Lord Krishna. This is the reason why this cane is kept near Lord Jagannath in the temple of Puri. The priests beat the devotees who visit with this cane.

the sins of life are destroyed

According to beliefs, all the sins of the devotees who are hit by the priest’s cane are destroyed. Devotees who eat cane get the right direction in life and their sorrows also reduce. This cane is made from coconut wood and is considered a special offering of Lord Jagannath. It is also advisable to bring cane from Jagannath Puri. Keeping this cane in the temple of the house and letting the family members touch it after the puja brings positivity in life.
