Mumbai: Ganesh Chaturthi, one of the most beloved Hindu festivals, is celebrated each year on the Chaturthi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. In 2025, the festival will begin on 27 August 2025, when devotees across India will welcome Lord Ganesha into their homes and pandals with great devotion and festivities. The celebrations will continue for 10 days, concluding with the grand visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi. During this time, chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya” will echo across streets, temples, and households.
The festival is not only about joy and celebrations but also about following traditional rules and rituals for the worship of Lord Ganesha. From the correct placement of the idol to specific do’s and don’ts during the puja, devotees are advised to observe these customs with care to ensure an auspicious celebration. Below are some of the most important rules to follow during Ganesh Chaturthi 2025.
Correct placement of the idol
When installing the idol of Lord Ganesha, it should always be placed in the north-east (Ishan Kon) direction of the home. The idol’s face should point towards the north. This placement is considered highly auspicious and ensures positive energy in the household.
Avoid broken idols
Never use a broken or damaged idol for worship, as it is considered inauspicious. If the idol accidentally breaks while being brought home or before installation, it should not be used for puja.
Do not offer Tulsi leaves
Lord Ganesha should never be offered Tulsi (basil) leaves or Ketaki flowers. Instead, he is especially fond of durva grass and marigold flowers, which should be included in the rituals.
Keep the home occupied
After the installation of the idol, the house should never be left empty. It is believed that Lord Ganesha arrives as an honoured guest, and therefore, someone should always be present at home to attend to him.
Maintain purity and discipline
During the 10 days of Ganesh Chaturthi, family members should observe purity and celibacy. The environment of the home should remain clean, peaceful, and spiritually uplifting to honour the presence of Lord Ganesha.
