Premier League: Chelsea secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday, as Moises Caicedo’s sensational second-half strike neutralized Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.
The result dampened Manchester United’s hopes of a triumphant start to their post-Erik ten Hag era, following the Dutch manager’s recent departure. Caicedo’s timely equalizer rescued a point for Chelsea, denying United a victory in their first Premier League match under interim management. Ten Hag was sacked on Monday with United languishing in 14th in the Premier League.
Chelsea are placed fourth in the table with 18 points while United, who had interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy in the dugout, are 13th on 12 points after 10 matches.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up to the penalty spot in the 70th minute and calmly converted the opportunity, sending Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez the wrong way.
The penalty was awarded after Sanchez was deemed to have spoiled Rasmus Hojlund, witnessing the Danish forward’s foot as he dived for the ball.
Manchester United’s hopes of securing their second league victory in six matches were temporarily boosted, but their joy was short-lived. Just four minutes after Fernandes’ penalty had put them ahead, Chelsea hit back with a swift equalizer.
Casemiro’s preliminary clearance of a corner kick left Moises Caicedo with a golden chance, and he capitalized with an exactly struck low volley.
Despite Andre Onana’s best efforts, the United goalkeeper could only get a hand to the ball before it flowed into the bottom corner, levelling the score and turning the momentum back in Chelsea’s favour.
