13 PhD researchers sat on strike
13 PhD researchers are sitting on strike at the gate of the Central Office of Kashi Hindu University since Monday. Students have made serious allegations of irregularities and discrimination in the research admission process in the History Department of the University. The researchers sitting in the movement have not yet received any assurance of any concrete solution from the university administration.
What is the whole matter?
The protesting students say that they are PhD researchers of the History Department for the academic session 2024-25, who were selected under the RET (Research Entrance Test) category. All the students had also deposited the prescribed fee for admission in the Main Campus (DMC – Department of Main Campus) on 23 March 2025. However, serious irregularities came to light in the admission list released almost seven months later on 25 October 2025.
Questions raised on seat allocation
According to the students, there were a total of 43 seats in the History department. In which 13 students were sent to affiliated colleges. 15 students were placed in the main campus (DMC). The protesting students allege that the 13 students who were sent to the affiliated colleges are all from the reserved category. At the same time, most of the 15 students placed in DMC are from general category, which includes only 2 OBC students.
What is the demand of BHU students?
Researchers allege that this decision clearly reflects caste discrimination. Regarding this, he submitted a written application to the Head of the Department, Controller of Examinations, Deputy Registrar, Registrar and Joint SC/ST-OBC Cell on 27 October 2025. Informed the Dean and Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Social Sciences through application and e-mail on 29 October 2025.
Lokpal’s role also ineffective
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Ombudsman was appointed by the Vice Chancellor. For resolution, the Ombudsman asked the students to fill a consent form, which the students submitted to the department on 17 November 2025. Despite this, on December 20, 2025, the department again released the same list, in which the same 13 reserved category students were again kept in the affiliated colleges.
Students say that students were kept in DMC on the basis of consent in other departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences, but they were treated differently in the History Department.

The protesting students allege that they have been facing mental harassment, caste discrimination and serious educational loss for the last 10 months. Forced to do so, he has started a protest movement from 22 December 2025.
