A professor of Jamia Millia Islamia has been suspended for asking a question in the examination about atrocities on Muslim minorities. A team has been formed to investigate this controversial question and they will remain suspended until the report comes.
New Delhi: A professor of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University has been suspended for asking a question about atrocities against Muslim minorities in the first semester examination of Social Work. Authorities have suspended Professor Virendra Balaji Shahare. After the controversy over the question, the university has formed a special team to investigate the matter. The professor will remain suspended until the report comes. In this question number 15, it was asked to explain with examples the atrocities being committed on Muslim minorities in the country. Registrar C.A. Sheikh Saifullah issued the order to suspend. He said that the suspension will continue till further orders. He has also been instructed not to leave Delhi during the suspension. By the way, the officials also said that no complaint will be lodged with the police against the professor.
This question had become the cause of much controversy and protest on social media. An official said the action was taken to maintain academic responsibility and institutional discipline. When the pictures in question started going viral online from Monday, it sparked strong reactions. When Kanchan Gupta, senior advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, shared the suspension notice on X, the matter became even more heated.
Jamia Millia Islamia has not issued any other statement apart from the suspension order. Sources said the inquiry committee will investigate how the question was prepared and whether it was approved, and whether there was any violation of university rules or exam guidelines.
