If the villagers themselves are involved in the supervision of these schemes, then it will not only be durable but people will also get the confidence of water protection at their level. He described the Water Life Mission started under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a step -changing move of rural India.

New policy will be implemented for three years

It was decided in the meeting that the ‘Rural Nal Water Scheme Operations, Retention and Management Policy’ prepared by the Public Health Engineering Department will be implemented for the next three years after competent approval. Through this policy, long-term operation of group water supply schemes as well as single village tap water schemes will be ensured.

How much progress has been made so far?

Principal Secretary P. Narhari said that till August 2019, only 12.11% i.e. about 13.5 lakh rural families in the state had water facilities from tap. Today this number has increased to 78.64 lakh families. That is, more than 70% of rural homes are now reaching water from tap. The goal is to ensure water supply to a total of 1.11 crore families by March 2027. At present, 52 of the 147 schemes of group tap water have been completed and the remaining 95 works are in progress.

Under the policy, the operation of tap water schemes will be the responsibility of the gram panchayats, but the Public Health Engineering Department will cooperate through contracted agencies in maintenance and technical work.
