Mp irrigation expansion: Does the way to give new strength to the state’s economy pass through the fields? Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav believes that yes. With this thinking, he has made it clear that in the coming three years, a target has been set to increase the irrigation sector in the state by 100 lakh hectares. This will not only increase the yield and income of farmers, but will also ensure stable water supply to areas such as industry and energy production.
Why is the expansion of irrigation sector important?
The Chief Minister said in the review meeting of the Department of Water Resources that agriculture, industry, drinking water and energy production- are the backbone of all these areas. At present, 52 lakh hectares of land is being irrigated from government sources in the state, but it will bring real changes to double it. The goal is that in the next three years this scope reached 100 lakh hectares.

How will the picture change from river link projects?
Inter -state river link projects were also discussed in the meeting. The Chief Minister described the Ken-Betwa Link National Project and the revised Parvati-Kali-Sindh-Chambal link project as extremely useful by the Chief Minister. He says that the implementation of these schemes will change the situation of about half the districts of the state. Dr. Yadav reminded that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had seen the dream of connecting the rivers, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is carrying forward. The special thing is that the central government is providing 90% financial support for such projects.
How is preparations for Simhastha 2028?
The meeting also reviewed the construction of ghats on the Shipra river and purification works. It was informed that the construction of the ghat for about 30 km will be completed by 2027. During Simhastha 2028, about 5 crore devotees will be able to bathe here in a day. Along with this, the progress of barrage construction works on Shipra was also seen.
How much irrigation sector has increased so far?
Officials said that in Rabi 2023-24, 44.56 lakh hectares of land was irrigated in the state, which increased to 52.06 lakh hectare in Rabi 2025-26. That is, 7.50 lakh hectares have expanded in the last one and a half years. In this, the Narmada Valley Development Department has added 5.11 lakh hectares and the Department of Water Resources has connected the area of 2.39 lakh hectares with irrigation. In the coming five years, 38 projects costing more than Rs 200 crore will be completed, from which more than 17 lakh hectares of area will come under irrigation. This year also, 2 lakh hectares of additional irrigation will be possible from the projects of Rajgarh, Ashoknagar, Damoh, Rewa and Betul districts.
