The Indian team for the T20 World Cup was announced on Saturday. However, the name of India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill is not included in the selected team for the World Cup. He has been dropped from the team due to poor form.
Gill could not show anything special in the recently concluded series against Africa. He scored four, zero and 28 runs in this series, while could not play the fifth match due to injury. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has cited his poor form as the reason for not getting a place in the team, although head coach Gautam Gambhir did not say anything on the question of Gill being dropped.
Gautam Gambhir has reached Delhi after the end of the five-match T20 series between India and South Africa. At the airport, when a journalist asked a question on the decision to drop Shubman Gill (who was the vice-captain till some time ago) from the team, Gambhir flatly refused to answer it and walked away and sat in his car.
Fans are divided into two groups regarding this behavior of Gambhir. Some believe that the coach should maintain transparency on the selection decisions, while some consider it to be Gambhir’s ‘focused’ style that he now wants to focus only on the selected team.
Agarkar said in the press conference after the announcement of the team, “We know what a great player he is, but at the moment perhaps he is not getting that many runs from his bat.” He said, “He was unfortunately left out of the last World Cup because we had decided to play with a different combination.” Combination has to be kept in mind while selecting the team. When you select a team of 15 players, someone has to be left out and this time unfortunately Gill had to be left out.
