Pollution Level In Delhi On Diwali: Within a few hours of Diwali, Delhi-NCR has become a gas chamber. Despite the ban on firecrackers in Delhi, fireworks were done on a large scale on the occasion of Diwali on Thursday night. Due to this, clouds of smoke covered the city. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed 700 in many areas of Delhi. In some areas, AQI has crossed 500. The average AQI of Delhi was recorded at 556. Whereas, 714 AQI was recorded in Anand Vihar, 631 in Defense Colony, 513 in Patparganj. Overall, the air quality in different areas of Delhi has reached very poor condition.
The team of TV9 Bharatvarsh not only saw the pollution haze from different areas of Delhi, but also felt it. Pollution could be clearly seen in the air with the help of street lights on NH 9 of Delhi. On the other hand, the view on the road from Noida to Delhi was almost the same. Even while going from Akshardham flyover towards NH 9, a blanket of pollution haze was visible.

Due to fireworks, Delhi’s air had reached very poor category at night itself. AQI 330 was recorded in Delhi at 10 pm on Diwali night. AQI was 307 on Wednesday. AQI reached severe category in major areas including Anand Vihar, Ghaziabad, Laxmi Nagar. The amount of PM 2.5 in the city’s air increased. Because of this people started having difficulty in breathing.
How was the weather last time?
In the year 2023, the sky on Diwali was much clearer than this time. Last time, meteorological conditions were also favourable, due to which AQI was recorded at 218. However, this time on the occasion of Diwali, the amount of pollution particles in the air in the city reached its peak. The remaining work was done by burning stubble and smoke coming from vehicles.
How dangerous are PM 2.5 particles?
The hazy skies brought back memories of the severe pollution of 2020 as PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels rose to 145.1 and 272 micrograms per cubic meter respectively at 9 pm. PM 2.5 is a microscopic particle that can penetrate deep into the respiratory system and cause health problems, especially in children, the elderly and those who already have respiratory diseases.

On Diwali night, the air was relatively better in areas around Delhi including Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram and the AQI in these cities was recorded in the poor category, while the AQI in Faridabad was recorded at 181.

On the occasion of Diwali in Delhi, AQI was recorded at 312 in 2022, 382 in 2021, 414 in 2020, 337 in 2019, 281 in 2018, 319 in 2017 and 431 in 2016.
