The country received 99.5 mm rainfall compared to the normal of 165.3 mm, which is a deficit of 39.8 percent. This is the fifth lowest rainfall in June since 1901. Of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions in the country, 24 (65 per cent) recorded deficient rainfall, and three (10 per cent) saw deficit rainfall during June.

Monsoon’s journey so far

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon reached Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 16. Monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 4, three days late as against the normal onset date of June 1.

On Tuesday, the Southwest Monsoon has advanced into entire Southeast and Northeast India and many parts of Central India and some parts of Northwest India.

Effect of El Nino behind less rain

No low pressure system (LPS) formed during June 2026. Typhoon activity was above normal in the West Pacific. However, the Meteorological Department said that most of the typhoon systems turned towards north-northwest direction, due to which LPS activity was suppressed in the Indian Ocean region.

The IMD said rainfall activity over India was negatively impacted due to the development of El Nino. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is in neutral phase, which could not help offset the negative impact of El Nino.

There is a possibility of less rain in July also

El Nino conditions are likely to continue during the remaining part of the 2026 southwest monsoon season. During July, most parts of the country are likely to receive below normal rainfall, except over northwest and north-east India, east-central India and some areas of the eastern peninsular region, where normal to above normal rainfall is likely.
