In ancient times, a Brahmin named Sudant lived in Avanti city. He was well versed in all the scriptures. His wife’s name was Vilasini, she was also very devoted to her husband. Sudanta was the priest of King Brihadratha of Avanti. It was Sudanta who taught the king how to run his kingdom according to religion. Although there were no problems in Sudant’s life but he had no children.

When Sudant did not get a child even after many treatments, he went to the forest with his wife and started doing penance. After a long time, Mahamuni Vamdev ji came to the forest and asked Sudant the reason for this penance. Sudant told him the whole story truthfully. Vamdevji told Sudant, ‘A childless person does not get salvation after death.’
Then when Sudant asked Vamadevji the reason for his problem, he told that ‘You were the priest of Avanti King Brihadrath, hence you too have to suffer the consequences of the sins you committed knowingly or unknowingly. This is why you don’t have any children.’ Then Sudant asked Vamdevji about the solution to his problem.
Then Vamdev ji said, ‘You become a devotee of Lord Shri Ganesh and worship him.’ After this, Vamdevji gave the one letter mantra of Shri Ganesh to Sudant. After receiving the mantra, he returned to Sudanta city and told the whole story to King Brihadratha. The king announced Chaturthi fast in the entire kingdom. In this way everyone started fasting on Chaturthi Tithi.
After this, first of all came Chaturthi Tithi of Shuklapaksha of Paush month. Everyone including the king and Sudanta observed that fast. Due to the effect of this fast, Sudant’s wife became pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful and long-lived son. After this, everyone on earth started fasting for Lord Ganesha on the Chaturthi of Shukla and Krishna Paksha. Due to the effect of that fast, everyone became healthy and happy. Since then this fast is being observed.
