Gotra literally means lineage or clan. In ancient times, the descendants of sages were divided into gotras. Every Gotra has a root sage, by whose name that Gotra is identified. For example Kashyap Gotra, Bhardwaj Gotra, Gautam Gotra. People of the same Gotra are considered to be descendants of the same ancestor, hence it is said that they have blood relations.

Religious reason for not marrying within the same Gotra

There are reasons behind not marrying within the same Gotra. According to Hindu religious texts, people of the same Gotra are considered brothers and sisters. This is because they are considered descendants of the same sage. In such a situation, marriage within a Gotra is considered a violation of Rishi tradition. It is believed that marrying in the same Gotra causes marriage defects, which causes problems in the life of the bride and groom. Not only this, it is said that the child born after marriage in the same Gotra is likely to suffer from physical and mental diseases.

Science has also accepted that if marriage is done within one Gotra, then many problems can occur. According to science, marriage in the same Gotra or clan can result in genetic defects in the children. There is nothing new to be seen in the child born to such a couple.
