TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh has alleged that the electoral list is being manipulated to benefit the BJP. He said that 23 opposition parties have unitedly written a letter to the CJI in this matter and demanded a judicial inquiry.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghosh on Tuesday alleged that the special intensive revision (SIR) process of voter lists is being “rigged” to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said that 23 opposition parties have jointly written a letter to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) demanding a judicial inquiry into the electoral process.
Speaking to ANI, Ghosh claimed that the opposition is united over the SIR process and accused the Election Commission of working in favor of the ruling party.
23 opposition parties wrote letter to CJI
Ghosh said, “There is complete unity in the non-NDA opposition that the SIR process is being used to benefit the BJP and manipulate the election results. In an unprecedented move, which has never happened before, 23 opposition parties… have written a joint letter to the Chief Justice of India, appealing to the conscience of the judiciary to look into the way the SIR process is being used to benefit the BJP.”
He alleged that the election, voting process and electoral process were being manipulated and said the opposition had approached the judiciary to investigate the issue.
He further said, “For the first time, 23 opposition parties have written a joint letter appealing to the judiciary. It has been written to the Chief Justice of India, appealing to the judiciary to take note of the way the SIR process is being manipulated to benefit the BJP.”
Ghosh said 21 opposition parties had earlier met on June 8 and had decided to jointly protest against what they described as irregularities in the SIR process. He informed that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) have also joined the initiative by signing the letter addressed to the CJI.
Rejecting suggestions of differences within the opposition, Ghosh insisted that all non-NDA parties were working together.
“The non-NDA opposition is completely united… We will move forward with complete unity, solidarity and spirit of resistance against the BJP and the way it is trying to hijack Indian democracy,” he said.
The India Bloc, which also includes AAP and DMK, has written to the Chief Justice of India expressing concern over the Election Commission’s special intensive amendment process and other election-related issues.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the letter, first proposed during the India Block meeting on June 8, has now been signed by 23 political parties and one independent member. TMC MP Derek O’Brien also confirmed that AAP and DMK were among the signatories.
Questions raised on UCC also
Ghosh also criticized the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and questioned the intentions and timing behind the move.
He said, “We are concerned about the intentions of the BJP. Why is the BJP bringing the UCC at this time? We see that whenever the BJP brings a law, it is to create social unrest… Without consensus and wide deliberations, we cannot support this UCC.”
His comments came a day after the West Bengal Assembly passed the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026 and the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
During the assembly proceedings, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the state is moving towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code and said a committee has been formed under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai to prepare a roadmap. He said a draft law would be presented before the state cabinet on July 2.
