Actor Vijay to lead TVK as CM face in 2026 Tamil Nadu polls, snubs BJP-AIADMK alliance

Chennai: In a significant political development, actor-turned-politician Vijay has been officially declared the Chief Ministerial face of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The announcement was made during the party’s working committee meeting held at its Panaiyur headquarters in Chennai on Friday, effectively ruling out any alliance with the BJP-AIADMK combine.

TVK chief Vijay has also stated that his party will never form an alliance with either the DMK or the BJP.

TVK Rejects Alliance Talks, Sets Stage for Triangular Contest

The decision marks a clear rebuff to overtures from both the BJP and AIADMK, who had been courting the fledgling party for a potential mega alliance. TVK’s resolution to contest independently under Vijay’s leadership dashes hopes of opposition unity against the ruling DMK. Party insiders revealed that over 15 resolutions were passed during the marathon meeting, including plans for a state-wide organizational revamp.

Grassroots Mobilization Planned Through Conferences and Tours

The party has outlined an ambitious outreach program, scheduling five regional conferences and 120 district-level meetings starting July. Vijay is expected to embark on an extensive tour across Tamil Nadu from September to December. The working committee also approved plans for a second state conference in August, while prioritizing the upcoming July 6 protest in Chennai demanding justice for custodial death victim Ajith Kumar as the launchpad for their mass contact initiative.

Political observers note that TVK’s decision to go solo signals the emergence of a credible third force in Tamil Nadu politics, potentially altering traditional bipolar electoral equations in the state.
