Who was Osman Hadi?
Sharif Osman Hadi was a key leader of the student movement in July 2024 against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was shot by unknown assailants while campaigning on December 12, after which he was taken to Singapore for treatment, where he died late Thursday night. As soon as the news of Hadi’s death came, violent demonstrations started in Bangladesh. Usman Hadi, 32, was the spokesperson of the Inquilab Manch opposing Sheikh Hasina. He was campaigning as an independent candidate from Dhaka-8 Nirchawan constituency in the elections to be held in February 2026.

Inquilab Manch is considered a radical Islamic organization of Bangladesh. The aim of this group is to wipe out Awami League from the country. Hadi has been calling himself a staunch opponent of India. He had clearly said that now the politics of those supporting India will not be allowed to continue in Bangladesh. Not only this, it had also released a controversial map in the name of Greater Bangladesh, in which many states of North-East of India were shown in Bangladesh.
One day national mourning for Osman Hadi
The Yunus government of Bangladesh has declared a day of national mourning on Saturday 20 December on the death of Osman Hadi. Yunus said that Hadi’s killers will not be spared. Hadi was a staunch enemy of fascist terrorists. His reference was clearly towards Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina.
