Diabetes is becoming a big problem for many big countries including India. This disease is spreading to such an extent in India that the cases of diabetes have increased almost 3 times in the last 25 years. India ranks second in terms of highest number of diabetes patients, while currently around 600 million people in the world are suffering from diabetes. According to a report, last year in 2024, one person died every 9 seconds due to diabetes.

In the edition of Diabetes Atlas (2025) released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), it has been estimated that the problem of diabetes will become catastrophic in the next 25 years. According to statistics, in the year 2024, 589 million people i.e. more than 58 crore people in the age group of 20-79 years across the world are suffering from diabetes and by 2050 this number will increase to more than 853 million (85 crore).

1 in every 9 suffers from diabetes

According to the report, at present one in every nine people between the age of 20-79 years across the world is suffering from this sweet disease. This number is also continuously increasing and is estimated to reach 853 million by 2050. The economy is also being affected due to the ever increasing disease. Nearly one trillion dollars has been spent on this and there is an increase of 338 percent in the last 17 years.

The number of deaths due to diabetes is also continuously increasing across the world. Last year in 2024, 34 lakh people worldwide died due to this disease, thus diabetes became the cause of death of one out of every 9 people.

Most patients in the Western Pacific region

If we look at the region-wise level on the global map, the westernmost Pacific region has the highest number of people suffering from diabetes at 215 million. 37 countries including China were included in this region. After this comes South-East Asia and here 107 million are suffering from this dangerous disease. 7 countries including India were included in this.

The number of diabetes patients in the Middle East-North Africa region, which comes at third place, is 85 million. There are 66 million diabetes cases in Europe, 56 million in North America and the Caribbean, and 35 million in South and Central America. Africa has the lowest number of diabetic patients at 25 million.

One out of every 7 patients in India is diabetic

Now if we talk about India, one out of every 7 diabetes patients globally is from India. In 2024, about 89.8 million people (about 9 crore people) in India between the age of 20-79 years were suffering from diabetes. Globally, India ranks second after China in terms of diabetes patients.

According to estimates, if the number of diabetes patients in India continues to increase at this rate, then after 25 years by 2025, the number of diabetes patients in the country will increase by 75 percent as compared to today. This number will increase to 156.7 million in 2050 compared to 89.80 million in 2024. Even then India will remain at second place in the global ranking.

5 times increase in 2050 compared to 2000

While the number of diabetes patients in the country was 32.7 million (more than 3.20 crore) in the year 2000, it will increase to 61.3 million (more than 6.12 crore) in 2011, 89.8 million (more than 8.98 crore) in 2024 and 156.7 million (more than 15.67 crore) in 2050. In comparison to 2000, this number will increase by about 5 times in 2050.

Diabetes also becomes a major cause of death. In 2011, 983,203 people died due to this disease in India, while in 2024 this number decreased and 334,922.2 people died.

India’s contribution in the field is 80 percent

India has a major contribution in diabetes in the South-East Asia region. In 2024, 89.8 million adults aged 20-79 years in India were living with diabetes, out of a total of 107 million people in the region.

In this way, India’s contribution in diabetes cases at the regional level is more than 80 percent. The number of adults with diabetes in the South-East Asia region is projected to increase by 73% to 184.5 million by 2050.

Pakistan will become number 3 by 2050

On the other hand, Lancet Diabetes Endocrinology 2025 has revealed that in 2024, the number of diabetes patients was 11.11% of the total population and more than 580 million adults were suffering from it. In 2050, about 13 percent of the total world population i.e. more than 850 million people will have diabetes.

Based on the number of diabetes patients, China has the highest number of patients. Here 148 million people are suffering from diabetes. After this comes India and here about 90 million people are suffering from the disease. America is at third place and Pakistan is at fourth place. Whereas in 2050, while China and India will retain their top positions in the list, Pakistan will fall to third place.
