patent application
The recognition of India’s innovation and research hub is continuously increasing. Evidence of this has also been seen in the financial year 2024-25 (FY25). Because during this period patent applications crossed the figure of 1 lakh. During this period, more than 1.1 lakh patent applications were filed in the IP offices of the country.
This number is about 20% more than the 92,168 patent applications filed in 2023-24. The special thing is that about 62% of these applications came from domestic innovators of the country, which shows self-reliant innovation and the growing Research and Development (R&D) base in the country. Overall, there was an increase of more than 18% in intellectual property rights (IPR) filings. Good growth was seen in all categories of patents, designs, trademarks and geographical indications. According to the annual report for 2024-25 of the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and GI, the total IPR filings increased from 6.3 lakh to 7.4 lakh in FY25.
Showcasing the growing trend of design and industrial innovation in the consumer and manufacturing sectors, design applications increased from 30,389 in FY24 to 43,005 in FY25. That means it increased by more than 41.5%. According to the IP Office, trademark applications, which is the most used commercial IP in the country, increased from 4.7 lakh in FY24 to about 5.5 lakh in FY25, an increase of 16%. At the same time, there was also an increase of about 20% in applications related to copyright and Geographical Indication (GI), which shows the increasing recognition of traditional knowledge and creative works.
Copyright filings increased from 36,726 to 44,095 in FY25, while GI applications increased from 134 to 275 in FY25. The IP Office has attributed this rapid growth to policy and administrative reforms. These include the Patent Rules, 2024, which made patent related processes easier and faster. Also, the International Classification for Industrial Design was adopted under the Locarno Agreement, which simplified design filing. Apart from this, technological progress also played an important role. AI based tools like trademark search technology and IP Sarathi chatbot were introduced, which increased the speed and accuracy of investigation and provided 24-hour assistance to stakeholders.
