Israel Medical Breakthrough: Tel Aviv University and Matricelf are going to do the world’s first Human Spinal Cord Implant Surgery. This revolutionary treatment can re -erect paralysed patients.
Human Spinal Cord Implant Surgery: Israel is going to become the first country in the world where human spinal cord will be transplanted. This historical surgery will be held in the next few months and it has raised the hope of standing up again for paralysed patients. This announcement was made by Tel Aviv University on Wednesday.
According to WHO data, more than 1.5 crore people worldwide suffer from spinal cord injury. Till now there was no permanent cure for it. Treatment was limited to stabilizing the patient’s condition, further damage and increasing functionality.
How will the new treatment work?
In this unique process, the patient’s own blood cells and fat tissues will be used. Blood cells will be converted into cells such as stem-call by re-purogram and made a special hydrogel scaffold from fat tissue. On this, a lab-grown spinal cord will be prepared which will be implanted in the backbone of the patient. This new tissue will replace the old damage part and re -connect the nervous system.
Miracle success in animal tests
Prof. Tal Diver is leading this project and is also the Chief Scientist of Matricel. Prof. Dwir said that this technique has proved to be great in animal studies. Rats that were paralyzed started running normally after this implant. He said that the spinal cord sends electrical signals from brain to the entire body. This chain ends forever when it breaks. Our technology works to re -connect this chain. Our goal is that patients can get up from wheelchair.
Compassionate Use Trials approval found in Israel
A few months ago, this project has received approval of trial on 8 patients under ‘Compassionate Use’ from the Ministry of Health of Israel. Dwir said that it is not only scientific success but also a matter of national pride. In the first surgery israel, an Israeli will be on the patient itself.
Role of matricelf
This technology has been committed by Matricelf in 2019 by taking licenses from Tel Aviv University and its technology transfer company Ramot. The company’s CEO Gill Hakim said that it is the game Changer for the world. This will bring new hope to Multi-Billion Dollar Market, where there was no effective solution to date. If this surgery is successful, it will create a new definition in Regenative Medicine and can become a new standard of care for paralysis treatment.
