UP Electricity Tariff: There is news of great relief for the electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh. New electricity rates may be announced in July 2026. The cost of smart meters will not be passed on to consumers.
The beginning of July may bring relief news for crores of electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh. People who have been waiting for change in electricity rates for a long time are expected to get relief soon. It is believed that many important decisions can be taken in the interest of consumers in the new electricity tariff to be released in the first week of July. These include the possibility of reducing electricity bills as well as big relief related to smart meters.
Instead of increasing electricity rates, you can get relief
The power companies of the state had demanded increase in electricity tariffs citing a revenue gap of about Rs 3,995 crore in true-up for the year 2024-25 and about Rs 12,453 crore for the year 2026-27. However, during the hearing of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, it was indicated that instead of putting additional burden on the consumers, provisions to provide relief to them are being considered.
Smart meter will not cost consumers
The biggest relief in the new tariff can be given to smart meters. It is proposed that the power companies themselves should bear the cost of installing smart meters instead of recovering it directly from consumers. Apart from this, new guidelines can also be implemented to increase people’s confidence regarding the accuracy of smart meters.
5 percent check meters will be installed
According to the proposal, 5 percent check meters will also be installed along with smart meters. Their purpose will be to ensure whether smart meters are giving correct readings or not. If any kind of discrepancy comes to light, it will be easy to investigate. It is believed that the proposal of Power Corporation to recover the cost of smart meter may also be rejected.
There will be strictness in resolving complaints
Emphasis has also been laid on improving consumer services in the new tariff. It may be made mandatory to dispose of complaints registered on control room number 1912 in a timely and serious manner. Redressal of complaints may also include provision for strict action against negligent officers and employees.
Announcement will be made after the advisory committee meeting
According to the information, the State Advisory Committee meeting is going to be held soon. After this, new electricity rates can be officially announced in the first week of July. Besides, fuel surcharge is also likely to be calculated on the basis of new standards, which may provide additional relief to consumers in their electricity bills.
