A 67-year-old retired professor has accused her 70-year-old husband of domestic violence, sexual and financial exploitation after 42 years. She filed a complaint after decades of abuse. This step was taken after the recent attack and eviction notice.
Bengaluru: In an era where silence is considered a virtue and tolerance is considered a virtue, a 67-year-old retired government professor has broken the silence of her 42-year marriage and revealed the bitterest truth of her life to the world. She has told everyone that sexual violence and domestic abuse do not reduce with increasing age. Former college principal Veena (name changed), who has dedicated her life to building the future of youth, has accused her 70-year-old husband Ramesh (name changed) of continuous mental, physical, financial and sexual abuse during their marriage. He lodged a complaint with Govindrajnagar police on Saturday. Despite facing difficulties in their marriage for so many years, now the reason to complain is due to another action of Ramesh. Ramesh has recently given a legal notice to Veena and her two sons to vacate the house within 8 days. Ramesh has given the reason for this that the property is in his name.
Veena, who got married in a hall on Cunningham Road in 1983, had an illustrious academic career, retiring as principal after serving in several colleges in Karnataka. In her complaint, she has alleged that her husband was unhappy with her professional success. They also belittled his PhD and promotion. She also alleged that the husband systematically forced her to transfer her salary, pension, gratuity and property into his name. She has claimed that after she was fired from her job at Kudremukh in 1993, Ramesh lived mostly on her earnings, and controlled her financially while continuing to exploit her.
Ramesh sexually abused
The most serious allegation pertains to an incident on November 22 this year, in which Veena alleged that while she was cleaning the house, she was forcefully dragged into a room and sexually assaulted. When they protested, they were kicked, tried to strangulate, abused and received death threats. She also alleged that her husband threatened to kill both her sons. He told that this attack has been captured in CCTV cameras, which were installed by the sons concerned about their safety.
Veena, who is a heart patient and has undergone bypass surgery, underwent medical treatment for chest pain and breathing difficulties and later obtained a medico-legal certificate. Even then, like most elderly women, she was hesitant in filing a complaint in the hope of saving her marriage at any cost. A case has been registered against the husband under various sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) including cruelty, assault, defamation, criminal intimidation and causing hurt. Keeping in mind the age of the accused, he has been given notice to appear for questioning.
