Indian team legend Sunil Gavaskar is among those former cricketers who wanted to see Vaibhav Suryavanshi playing during the Ireland series. However, Vaibhav was kept out of both the matches.
Whereas two other players present in the team, Prince Yadav and Suryansh Shedge made their debut in the second match. Sunil Gavaskar has said that he is surprised that Vaibhav Suryavanshi did not get a chance to debut during the two-match T20 series against Ireland. Gavaskar believes that the young batsman is fully prepared for international cricket. He has expressed hope that he might get a chance in the upcoming England series.
he will play both matches
Many felt that Vaibhav Suryavanshi could be tried in the senior team during the Ireland tour, but the team management is not thinking of giving a chance to the young batsman right now. The performance of Indian batsmen in the series against Ireland was disappointing. Only Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Verma were able to score half-centuries in the series and other batsmen were seen struggling to score runs. Sunil Gavaskar told India Today, “I expected Vaibhav Suryavanshi to debut in the Ireland series. I believed that he would play both the matches. This would have been a great way to acclimatise him to international cricket ahead of the tough challenges ahead.”
The former cricketer further said, “”He will definitely get his chance. These are the players whom you cannot ignore for very long. If not in Ireland, then in the England series, he will definitely be around the team.” He indicated that due to the rotation of players and workload management, the team’s doors may open for this young player.
Ireland won the series
Jai Mundra, a software engineer from Tonk, Rajasthan, shattered India’s IPL star-studded batting line-up and Ireland created history in a charismatic performance by defeating T20 world champions India by one run in the second T20 on Sunday, clinching the series 2-0. This is the biggest moment in Ireland’s cricket history after the victory over England in the ODI World Cup 2011. By defeating a strong team like India, the confidence of this team will now be sky high.
Mundra, an Indian passport holder, took three wickets for 32 runs in four overs. He did not even allow Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma to open the account and also took the wicket of Indian captain Shreyas Iyer. In response to 155 runs to win, India could only score 153 runs for nine wickets. In the last overs, Harshit Rana tried his best by scoring 21 runs in ten balls but was out on the fifth ball of the last over. With this defeat, India’s campaign of winning 16 consecutive series in T20 cricket also came to an end. India have not lost a T20 series since mid-2023.
