Shanishchari Amavasya 2025: Date, puja rituals, remedies and significance

Mumbai: When Amavasya (new moon day) coincides with a Saturday, it is known as Shanishchari Amavasya. This day is considered highly significant in Hindu traditions, as devotees believe it can reduce the malefic effects of Shani Dosha, Shani Sade Sati, and Shani Dhaiyya. By performing specific rituals, one can seek relief from hardships and invite the blessings of Lord Shani.

In 2025, Shanishchari Amavasya falls on Saturday, 23 August, which corresponds to the Krishna Paksha Amavasya of the Bhadrapada month. Devotees observe this occasion with evening prayers, charitable acts, and chanting of mantras to please Lord Shani and gain protection from difficulties in life.

Evening rituals hold special significance

On Shanishchari Amavasya, prayers must be performed in the evening, as this is believed to be the most auspicious time to worship Lord Shani. Charity holds great importance on this day. Donating black lentils (urad dal), black sesame seeds, and iron is considered highly meritorious.

Remedies for Shani Sade Sati and Dhaiyya

Those troubled by Shani Sade Sati or Shani Dhaiyya are advised to light a lamp filled with mustard oil and chant the mantra “Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah” 108 times. This practice is said to reduce the intensity of Shani’s influence and bring peace of mind.

Chanting mantras and Shani Chalisa

Reciting the Shani Chalisa and chanting Shani mantras on this day is believed to remove obstacles and minimise ongoing troubles. Devotees perform these practices with deep faith to ensure stability and protection in their lives.

Charity and helping the needy

Helping the underprivileged is a key part of Shanishchari Amavasya rituals. Donating black clothes and black shoes, and offering bread smeared with mustard oil to a black dog, are considered especially effective remedies to earn Shani Dev’s blessings.
