Maserati are phasing out their four-cylinder engine

New Delhi: The Maserati Grecale might be the brand’s newest vehicle, but the Italian automaker is making a number of powertrain tweaks for 2026. The crossover will drop the base four-cylinder engine from their lineup and increase the model’s starting price. The good news is that the Grecale Model will now be the brand’s entry-level offering.

It now comes with a detuned version of the Maserati’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 engine. It produces 386 bhp, which is 60 bhp more than the outgoing four-cylinder engine that was in the Modena, and it costs the same.

This, of course, makes the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid engine obsolete as well. Maserati offers two versions of the powertrain for the crossover, making either 296 bhp or 325 bhp. The high-powered Grecale Trofeo rolls into the new model year unchanged and still makes 523 bhp from the V6.

Maserati will continue to offer an all-electric version of the crossover, and it comes in 2026 with around 440 miles of range, which is an extra 48 miles in the new all-wheel-drive disconnect feature on the EV.

A while back, there were media reports that Stellantis were considering offloading the struggling Italian brand, but the brand has time and again vehemently denied this. Sales for Maserati were down 48 per cent through the first three months of the year, with global shipments falling by 14 per cent by the end of September.

A modest powertrain change might not be quite a lot to skyrocket the sales for the brand, of course. The extra power is a goodie that comes at a heftier price as well. So, for that extra power from the twin-turbocharged V6 engine, the question remains if it is worth the price.

The powertrain does make sense for the reputation that brand has, but there might be too much competition at a more reasonable price.
