New Delhi: Gujarat’s Ahmedabad will host three major international sports events, including the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in 2025, according to an announcement on Tuesday.
The city is traditionally known for its trade and enterprise, is now ready to welcome athletes from around the world. The three major sporting events in 2025 are the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, the Asian Aquatics Championship, and the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup Football Qualifiers.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2025 is scheduled to be held at the Naranpura Sports Complex in Ahmedabad from August 24 to 30. More than 350 players from 29 countries will compete in the championship, said the release.
After this, the city will host the Asian Aquatics Championship in September-October, in which swimmers from China, Japan, and Korea will participate. India is also one of the seven countries to host the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers, which are scheduled to be held from November 22 to 30.
All the football games scheduled in the nation will take place at the Arena by TransStadia in Ahmedabad. The city will host Group D of the AFC U-17 Asian Cup, in which countries such as India, Iran, Chinese Taipei, and Lebanon will compete.
Ahmedabad to host two more events in 2026
Ahmedabad will also host the Asian Weightlifting Championship and the Archery Asia Para Cup in 2026. Additionally, the country is set to host the World Police and Fire Game 2029 in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar and Ekta Nagar (Kevadia).
India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games was approved recently, and Ahmedabad will host the event. The release further stated that all these events will prove to be a crucial step towards establishing the state as a multi-sport high-performance destination.
“With modern sports complexes and advanced facilities coupled with the new Sports Policy 2022-27, Gujarat has now become capable of hosting international-level competitions,” the release added.
