After being expelled from the state, Lumpak started earning his living by stealing. While living in the forest, he used to kill animals and birds and eat them. The forest where Lumpak lived was very dear to God. There was a Peepal tree in the forest. Lompak spent most of his time under that tree.
Once on the tenth day of Krishna Paksha of Pausha month, Lumpak became unconscious due to cold weather. His hands and legs became stiff. Lumpak remained in this position throughout the night. Next day when he woke up after sunrise, he started searching for food. He picked up some fallen fruits and went under the same Peepal tree again.
But he did not like those fruits, so he did not eat them. Feeling sad, he placed those fruits under the Peepal tree and said, ‘O God! May you be satisfied with these fruits. That night Lumpak could not sleep. In this way, due to ignorance, he fasted on Ekadashi. Due to this Lord Vishnu became very pleased with him.
By fasting on Ekadashi, all his sins were destroyed and his intellect also became pure. When King Mahishman came to know about this, he called Lumpak and handed over the charge of the kingdom to him. Lumpak started ruling as a devotee of God and a servant of the people. The people also started living very happy in his kingdom.
