Saphala Ekadashi fasting story

According to the legend, in ancient times there was a city named Champavati. A king named Mahishman ruled there. King Mahishman had four sons. Among the four, the king’s eldest son Lumpak was the most evil and a great sinner. Along with the people of the state, the subjects were also unhappy and fed up with Lumpak, but no one ever took his complaint to the king.

However, one day King Mahishman came to know about his son’s misdeeds. After this the king expelled him from the kingdom. After leaving the state, Lumpak started living in a forest. The forest in which he lived was very dear to the gods and goddesses. There was an ancient Peepal tree in the forest. Lumpak used to rest under it. Gods used to reside in the Peepal tree.

One day cold winds started blowing in the forest. Because of this Lumpak fell unconscious. Till the next day he remained lying there in the same condition. Then he woke up due to the heat of the sun and started searching for food in the forest. There was no strength even to hunt in Lumpak that day. So he plucked fruits from the tree and brought them. However, despite being hungry, Lumpak could not eat the fruits. Because he only ate meat.

At last he placed the fruits near the root of the Peepal tree. Then with a sad heart he offered it to God. Then he started crying and spent the whole night crying. Lumpak did not eat anything for more than 24 hours. Even if unknowingly, his Ekadashi fast was completed. Actually, the day when all this happened to Lumpak, it was Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu was very pleased with his fasting and night vigil and liberated him from all his sins.

In the morning a divine chariot came and stopped in front of Lumpak. Then a voice came from the sky, in which it was said that all the sins of Lumpak would be destroyed due to the influence of Lord Narayana. Also, in Akashvani, Lumpak was told to go back to his father and get the kingdom. Lumpak was happy after listening to Akashvani and went and told the whole story to his father.

King Mahishman was pleased after hearing all the words of his son and he handed over his kingdom to him. Since then the tradition of observing Saphala Ekadashi fast started. It is believed that whoever reads or listens to the story of Saphala Ekadashi fast, all his wishes are fulfilled and his sins are destroyed.
