This strategy of the company has increased uncertainty among the employees, as many people were suddenly told through email that their jobs could be terminated.
Focus on AI and Data Center became the biggest reason for Oracle layoffs
According to the information, Oracle is currently investing rapidly in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data center projects (Oracle AI Investment). To make these expensive investments, the company wants to cut down its expenses and that is why the number of employees is being reduced. The company believes that future technology will be AI based, so resources are being deployed in that direction. It is being told that Oracle has about 4,000 employees in Romania and out of these, more than 500 people may be affected by this new layoff. It is clear from this that this is not just a limited scale cut but a restructuring being done on a large scale.
Notices sent in a phased manner, not all at once
According to the employees, they did not receive any official announcement simultaneously. Emails were sent at different times from HR stating that the employees concerned were “proposedly affected”. This terminology created confusion among many people, as they were not fired immediately. Due to emails arriving at different times, the rest of the employees remained worried throughout the day as to whether they would get the next notice. Many employees say that their Slack and other internal systems remained active even after receiving the notices.
Many departments of Oracle came under the scope of layoffs, only one team was not affected.
This layoff is not limited to any one department. Employees in multiple business units are impacted, including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), Database Technologies, Customer Success Services, Fusion Applications, Oracle Health, Enterprise Applications, General and Administrative. That means its impact has reached the engineering, technical support and administrative teams.
Oracle’s earnings increased, yet why are jobs decreasing?
According to financial data, Oracle’s income in Romania has increased compared to last year, but despite this the company has adopted a strategy of reducing costs. It is believed that the huge investment on AI infrastructure in the coming times is the main reason for this decision. There is discussion among the employees that the affected people may get severance package, additional salary and some period of garden leave depending on the length of service. However, the company has not officially confirmed the number or package of employees affected. At present, it is believed that this move of Oracle is not limited to Romania only, but is part of the bigger picture of AI-centric change in the global tech industry.
