Former Union Home Minister and Congress leader Shivraj Patil passed away at the age of 91. He was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Defense and Home Minister. After the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, he resigned from the post of Home Minister, taking moral responsibility.

Mumbai: Former Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil has passed away. He was 91 years old. He died today at his home in Latur, Maharashtra. Patil was suffering from age-related diseases for a long time. He was being taken care of at home. But today at around 6:30 am, he breathed his last at his home.

Shivraj Patil, who was active in politics for a long time, had also held the post of Lok Sabha Speaker in his political career. During the Congress government, he held several important positions in the Union Cabinet, including several major ministries. He had created a record by winning from Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times.

Shivraj Patil had held many responsible posts including Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Defense Minister, Home Minister and Governor of Punjab. Born on October 12, 1935 in Chakur village of Latur district, Shivraj Patil entered active politics through Congress. He won from Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times. Even after the defeat in 2004, his influence did not diminish. He returned to central politics through the Rajya Sabha and held the post of Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008.

Earlier, he played an important role as Defense Minister in the cabinets of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He was the Speaker of the 10th Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. After serving as the Home Minister, he also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.

The most talked about controversy of Shivraj Patil’s career was after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks of 2008. He was widely criticized for the security lapses that came to light during the attack. Just two days after the attack, on 30 November 2008, he resigned as Home Minister, taking moral responsibility. During that time, the matter of changing clothes thrice in a single day was also much discussed.
