As torrential downpours continue across Maharashtra for the third consecutive day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai and its suburbs. The weather office warned of heavy to very heavy showers through Monday, with gusty winds of up to 50 kmph.
Showers to persist across Maharashtra
Lightning accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rain is expected in Marathwada and the Ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra. The Konkan-Goa belt is likely to see widespread ‘heavy to very heavy rain’. IMD has warned of extremely heavy downpour in isolated pockets in the region. The IMD said the wet spell would continue until August 23.
Mumbai under deluge: Traffic and transport hit hard
Several parts of Mumbai were waterlogged on Monday, disrupting traffic across the city. The harrowed commuters had to battle the additional woes while returning to work after the long weekend. Serpentine traffic jams were reported on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle. Flooding choked traffic movement in Sion’s Gandhi Market.
IMD forecast for the next 48 hours
Next 24 hours: Moderate to heavy rain in Mumbai and suburbs, with very heavy showers possible. Winds of 40–50 kmph expected. Temperatures are likely to be around 28°C (max) and 24°C (min).
Next 48 hours: Moderate to heavy rainfall with the possibility of intense showers towards night. Temperatures around 27°C (max) and 24°C (min).
Warning for fishermen
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. On August 18, squally conditions with winds of 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are expected along the North Konkan coast. Between August 19 and 21, winds may reach 50–60 kmph with gusts up to 70 kmph in the same region.
