Mason Greenwood’s Brace Secures Marseille’s 3-2 Comeback Victory Against Union Saint-Gilloise

Mason Greenwood shone for Marseille, scoring twice in a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Union Saint-Gilloise. This win significantly bolstered their chances of advancing to the Champions League knockout stages.

The Belgian team initially took a surprising lead, but Roberto De Zerbi’s squad managed to turn the game around.

Anan Khalaili gave Union SG an early advantage with a precise low shot into the bottom-right corner just five minutes into the match. However, Marseille responded swiftly. Ten minutes later, Igor Paixao capitalised on a rebound from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s saved attempt, sending the ball into the net’s roof.

Greenwood scored his first goal four minutes before halftime, delivering a low shot past Kjell Scherpen. Despite Scherpen getting a hand on it, he couldn’t prevent it from finding the net. In the 58th minute, Greenwood extended Marseille’s lead by skillfully turning his defender and curling a beautiful strike into the bottom-left corner.

Union SG showed resilience as Khalaili scored again after seizing on a loose clearance. However, their efforts dwindled as Kevin Mac Allister and Promise David had late goals disallowed for offside. Geronimo Rulli made an impressive save in the final moments to deny David’s header.

Elsewhere in the competition, Monaco climbed to 18th place in the standings following a narrow 1-0 triumph over Galatasaray. Folrain Balogun secured victory with a penalty in the 68th minute.

Despite appearing comfortable at one stage, Marseille faced intense pressure towards the end as Union SG pushed hard for an equaliser. Greenwood has been prolific, scoring 35 goals across all competitions over two seasons. Only Ousmane Dembele has more with 38 goals.

Greenwood was instrumental for Marseille, leading with four shots contributing to an expected goals (xG) tally of 0.59 out of Marseille’s total of 1.48 xG during this match.
