IndiGo Crisis Update: Major irregularities in IndiGo flights at the country’s airports have troubled the passengers. Amid the crisis, which has affected the peak season of weddings, holidays and business trips, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu warned in Parliament of taking strict action against IndiGo to set an example for all airlines. Let us tell you that the Indigo crisis remained at its peak for the 7th day today. More than 350 flights were canceled on Monday also.

We are not taking Indigo’s issue lightly – Government

The minister said in the Rajya Sabha that this entire situation arose due to the internal problem of IndiGo. After the implementation of new passenger safety rules, hundreds of flights had to be canceled due to crew shortage. He clearly said, ‘We are serious about the safety of the pilot, crew and passengers. Indigo had to manage the crew and roster. The passengers had to face a lot of problems. We are not taking this matter lightly. If any airline violates the rules, strict action will be taken. He also said that the government has started seriously investigating this matter. He also said that the government wants more players to come into the aviation sector. ‘It is possible to have five big airlines in the country.’

Opposition walkout from the House on Indigo issue

Due to not agreeing with the reply from the Union Minister, the opposition walked out of the House and said that there is IndiGo crisis and duopolistic nature of Indian aviation. IndiGo and Air India have majority of the market.

What is the reason for Indigo crisis?

  • The rules, implemented about two years ago, are meant to reduce pilot fatigue and increase the safety of flights.
  • About 2,200 flights of IndiGo are operated every day, whose downtime is kept low. After the implementation of the new rules, there was a shortage of crew.
  • Thousands of flights had to be canceled due to crew shortage, causing immense trouble to passengers.
  • As the situation worsened, DGCA temporarily relaxed the new rules.
