A team of researchers from China’s University of Science and Technology has cured Parkinson’s patients with a new stem-cell therapy. This research can be a big step towards eliminating the disease in future.

This disease occurs when the neurons that produce dopamine in the brain gradually die. Due to this, problems like trembling hands, inability to walk and inability to balance the body start occurring. This disease usually occurs in people above 60 years of age, although in some cases it can occur in people younger than this also.
What is China’s new research?
Chinese scientists have prepared stem cells. It has been designed in such a way that neurons containing dopamine continue to be produced in it. If these are reduced in someone, then with the help of this stem cell they will be transplanted into that patient. At present, Phase One clinical trial has been completed. So far, this stem-cell transplant has been given to 6 patients.
Research revealed that there was significant improvement in the symptoms of Parkinson’s in these 6 patients. These patients became normal within three to four months of stem cell transplant. That means this treatment was not only reducing the symptoms but also curing the disease.
The trial is in the initial stages
Even though stem cell treatment brought the disease of 6 patients under control, this trial is still at a very small level. This needs to be done on a large scale. Only then will its side effects and other things be known. However, this trial has proved that the neurons that are destroyed in neurological diseases like Parkinson’s can also be regenerated.
