New Delhi: According to Vedic astrology, the Sun – regarded as the king of planets – changes its zodiac sign every month, completing the entire zodiac cycle in one year. On the day after Krishna Janmashtami, i.e. 17 August, the Sun transited into Leo, which is its own sign. This planetary shift is known as a Sankranti, and when the Sun enters Leo, it is celebrated as Simha Sankranti.
From 17 August onwards, the Sun will remain in Leo for one month until 17 September, after which it will move into Virgo. This annual transition is considered highly significant in both astrology and Hindu tradition, with direct effects on zodiac signs and spiritual practices.
Surya transit in Leo on 17 August
As per the Hindu Panchang, this year’s Simha Sankranti is considered particularly auspicious because the transit occurred on a Sunday – a day dedicated to Lord Surya. At around 2 AM on 17 August, the Sun moved from Cancer into Leo, marking the beginning of this important period.
Astrological impact of Simha Sankranti
Astrologers suggest that this transit will prove beneficial for natives of Aries, Leo, Libra, and Scorpio. For these zodiac signs, the period is expected to bring luck, opportunities, and favourable outcomes.
On the other hand, Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn, and Pisces natives may face challenges and obstacles during this phase. Experts advise individuals belonging to these signs to remain cautious and avoid impulsive decisions throughout the transit period.
Rituals and practices on Simha Sankranti
In Hindu belief, worshipping Lord Surya during Simha Sankranti is considered extremely auspicious. Devotees are encouraged to perform Surya Puja, chant mantras, and offer donations.
Offerings of red flowers, copper, jaggery, wheat, and lentils (masoor dal) are believed to bring good fortune. Additionally, chanting mantras such as “Om Adityaya Namah” or “Om Bhaskaraya Namah” on this day is said to invoke divine blessings and ensure prosperity.
