Why Kharmas Considered Inauspicious: Kharmas is held twice a year. The period of Kharmas has been described as inauspicious in Hindu religious scriptures. Kharmas occurs when Lord Sun transits in Sagittarius and Pisces. Kharmas lasts from mid-December till Makar Sankranti in January. Then Kharmas lasts from March to mid-April. In Hindu religion, the period of Kharmas is considered inauspicious, hence no auspicious or auspicious work is done during this period.
Kharmas is starting once again on 16 December 2025. The duration of Kharmas is one month. No auspicious or auspicious work is done during this period. Let us know why Kharmas is considered inauspicious. What is the religious and astrological reason for considering it inauspicious?
Religious reason for Kharmas being inauspicious
According to mythological texts, Lord Surya revolves around the universe riding on seven horses. Lord Surya never stops, because as soon as he stops the world will stop. Lord Surya’s horses get tired due to continuous running and lack of rest. Once Lord Surya saw the pitiful condition of his horses, he was moved. Then he took his horses to the bank of a pond. After this they realized that if the chariot stopped, disaster would happen, but the horses were fortunate that Lord Surya found two donkeys on the bank of the pond.
Then God left the horses to rest and attached the donkeys to his chariot. Because of this the speed of the chariot has slowed down. There was also some reduction in the brightness of the sun. Then as soon as the cycle of one month was completed, God attached the horses back to the chariot. In this way, whenever the Sun enters Sagittarius or Pisces, Kharmas occurs. Since the brightness of the Sun decreases during this period, the auspicious works done during this period do not yield full results. Therefore Kharmas is not auspicious.
Astrological reason for Kharmas being inauspicious
When Lord Sun enters the Jupiter’s zodiac sign Sagittarius or Pisces, then the influence of the planet Jupiter reduces. It is necessary for Jupiter to be effective for auspicious works, hence as soon as Lord Sun enters Sagittarius or Pisces, auspicious works are stopped. According to astrology, there is enmity between Lord Sun and Jupiter, hence when Lord Sun goes into the zodiac sign of Jupiter, it reduces its intensity. Because of this, Lord Surya does not provide auspicious results.
For auspicious work, it is necessary for both Lord Sun and Jupiter to be effective, but during the transit of Lord Sun in Sagittarius or Pisces, the influence of both of them gets reduced, hence no auspicious or new work gets complete results during this period, hence new work is not started in Kharmas.
