The government has decided to take an important step regarding the purity of silver jewelery. From 1 September 2025, the new rule of hallmarking on silver jewelery may apply. However, this rule will be voluntary in the beginning, that is, customers can buy jewelery with hallmarks or also choose jewelery without hallmark. This will provide an option to customers in a way and it will not be mandatory at the moment. This process will be exactly the same way as hallmarking was started for gold jewelery earlier. These new rules implemented by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will make it even easier for customers to recognize the purity and quality of silver jewelery. Along with this, the trend of fake and fraud jewelery will be controlled, which will provide pure and quality jewelery to customers.
Standard of purity for silver jewelery
Under the new system, BIS has set a total of six purity levels for silver, which are as follows: 900, 800, 835, 925, 970 and 990. These purity levels aim to ensure that the silver that customers get is of the same quality, for which they are paying money. A six -digit unique hallmark ID will be given on each ornament, through which customers will be able to know whether the jewel is real or not and how much purity in it. From September 1, the customer will have both options – buying hallmark silver and silver without hallmark. However, experts believe that customers’ trend will move towards hallmark jewelery, as it will increase confidence in the quality of jewelry. Not only this, this change will also prove beneficial for the jewelery industry, because this will increase transparency and reduce fraud cases.
What are the benefits for customers?
The biggest advantage of hallmarking is that now customers will be able to easily ensure whether the silver jewel they are buying is real or fake. Through the “Verify Huid” feature on BIS Care App, customers can easily verify the hallmark given on any jewelry. In this way, fake and adulterated jewelry will be protected, and customers will get full value of their money. In addition, hallmarking on silver jewelery will increase transparency in the jewelery market and it will further increase customers’ confidence. This step will ensure purity of silver jewelery across the country, which will increase competition in the market and will control the sale of fake products.
Hallmarking rules of gold jewelery were already implemented
Significantly, this hallmarking rule is not new. Earlier in 2021, the government made hallmarking mandatory on gold jewelery. Now this system is also being implemented for silver jewelery on the same lines. This will also allow quality guarantee in silver jewelery after sleeping, which will prove to be an important step for the customer.
