Cancellation of a cricket match is not a new or big deal. Often matches are canceled due to rain or bad weather. On some occasions, matches have been canceled even after the pitch was declared dangerous. Even on a few occasions, some matches have had to be canceled due to ruckus or riots during the match. But the reason why the match had to be canceled in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League would hardly have happened before. Here the match between Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers was canceled because the ball sank on the pitch in the middle of the match and a crater was formed.
The ball sank onto the pitch during the match
On Friday 5th December at Adelaide Grounds WBBL 2025 The 37th match of the season was being played. In this match, host Adelaide batted first and scored 167 runs losing 4 wickets in 20 overs. After the end of Adelaide’s innings, there was a break of 15 minutes before Hobart started batting. Like every match, here too during this break the ground staff was repairing the pitch. During this time, a heavy roller was also being run on the pitch and this shocking incident happened here.
It so happened that when the break was going on, some players were practicing in a part of the field. Then a ball reached towards the pitch and at the same time came under the roller being run on the pitch. What happened next, due to being pressed by the heavy roller, the ball sank on the pitch and a big crater was formed there. Seeing such condition of the pitch, the ground staff were shocked and hastily started efforts to repair it.
Match canceled for the second time due to strange reason
But when the pitch could not be repaired, the umpires decided to cancel the match. This incident shocked everyone and WBBL started being ridiculed on social media. Such strange scenes are often seen in WBBL. In the current season itself, the umpire decided to cancel a match when only 3 runs were needed to win, but due to rain, the umpire decided to end the match there and then there was an uproar over it.
