IndiGo crisis: Bride and groom miss their own reception, parents take their place on stage

Hubballi: A wedding reception in Karnataka’s Hubballi turned into an unusual online celebration after the bride and groom were unable to attend due to IndiGo flight cancellations. The couple, Medha Ksheera Sagar from Hubballi and Sangama Das from Bhubaneswar, both software engineers based in Bengaluru, had planned to join their reception on December 2 but were left stranded by IndiGo flight issues.

The pair, who married in Bhubaneswar on November 23, had booked an IndiGo flight from Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru and onward to Hubballi. Some of their relatives, who booked tickets via Mumbai, were also unable to reach Hubballi in time.

Despite the setback, the bride’s parents decided that the show must go on. The reception venue at Gujarat Bhavan in Hubballi was already decorated, guests had arrived and all arrangements were in place. To avoid disappointing everyone, the bride’s parents took their seats in the couple’s chairs and performed the traditional rituals.

Meanwhile, Medha and Sangama dressed up for the occasion from Bhubaneswar and joined the ceremony virtually. Through video conferencing, they greeted relatives, interacted with guests and participated in the reception remotely.

IndiGo flight cancellations

IndiGo suffered one of its worst operational crises on Thursday, cancelling over 550 flights, its highest single-day cancellations in 20 years. The chaos, lasting three days, stemmed from crew shortages, planning lapses, winter congestion and tech issues, pushing the airline’s on-time performance down to 19.7%. Major airports nationwide faced severe disruption, with Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad most affected.

IndiGo admitted it misjudged pilot requirements under the new FDTL Phase 2 norms, which increased night-duty classifications and staffing needs. Some rules have now been temporarily rolled back. After meetings with the Civil Aviation Ministry and DGCA, IndiGo said normal operations should resume by February 10.
